In just a moment, I'm going to tell you what that one thing is, but first I want to tell you one of the problems that stops most actors from getting more casting calls. And here's the problem:

Most actors feel that having an acting career is very different than most careers because there is no clearcut path for how to be successful. However, it's not as different as you might think.

Although red carpet premieres and movie stars sitting near you at a nice restaurant may be unique to a Hollywood acting career, some things about Hollywood are just like any other business. The need for marketing yourself as an actor (to get more casting calls) is one of those .

Hollywood is exactly like any other business when it comes to marketing. Just like a dentist, a clothing shop, and a small business must market themselves. You must market your acting talents, and let casting directors, acting agencies, and talent managers know that you are available for hire.

And, of course, you must present yourself as a professional in the process. That simple concept is the same for everyone. It's called marketing.

As an actor, you must let the casting directors know that you are a professional actor who has taken acting classes, who may also be a SAG member (you don't have to be), that you are available and desirable for them to cast you in their film, or TV movie, or commercial, soap opera, or whatever they may be casting.

Do I need a talent agent to get Casting Directors to call me for auditions?

The answer is no. You don't have to have an agent. Although Casting Directors prefer to work with agents for simple manageability, the fact is that if they need your type for a role, and your photo crosses their desk at just the right time, and they think you could do the job, there is no reason that they wouldn't pick up the phone and call you for an audition. It's really THAT simple.

But the only way that can happen is if you are sending them your photo. And preferably if you are sending it on a regular basis so they start to recognize you. If they start to know you as someone who has been at it for a while, they will see you are serious about your acting career, not just "giving it a shot," with no real plan to be a professional actor.
