Basic History
Dr. Melody Jackson founded Smart Girls Productions in 1992 as a marketing and
consulting firm for actors and screenwriters. Alive, well, and going strong, Smart Girls'
unique position as a mom-and-pop-hands-on-shop dedicated to marketing actors and screenwriters results
from Melody bringing together and building upon three major areas of her expertise:
1) Computer and Technology: Starting with a bachelor's degree in computer science, Melody is a "self-proclaimed computer geek" and has developed proprietary SmartStudio™ specialized software for tracking who's who in the industry (agents, managers, producers, casting directors) and then being able to select the best people for you to market to. She uses her tech savvy to support her clients in using the latest, hip and trendy websites to promote their careers in addition to the tried and true traditional marketing methods which are vital for actors and screenwriters.
2) Professional Sales and Marketing: Prior to starting Smart Girls, Melody was a very successful sales and marketing exec for film and television distribution accounting software, so she has a critical understanding of the money side of showbiz. This aspect of her experience gives her an insider's view on why given movies are considered to be commercially viable and what makes a given actor an agent's financial dream.
3) Human Nature, Success, & Motivation: In 2003 Melody completed her Ph.D. in Mythological Studies from Pacifica Graduate Institute in Carpinteria, California. This program included a deep study of psychology, literature, philosophy, and religion, with a focus on the humanities. Melody's focus here was on exploring the stories people tell to explain why things are the way they are, and how human beings use their personal stories and myths to justify their own behavior and beliefs.
Melody uses the deep insight she gained from this program to playfully and nurturingly push and pull her clients to discover and move beyond where their own viewpoints limit what's possible for them in their careers.
Melody also led motivational seminars for four years with a world-class organization for transformation, so she brings an edgy insight into personal responsibility. She also uses her deep understanding of what makes people tick to coach actors and writers to blast their career baggage to smithereens.
Bringing these three areas of interest and expertise together, Melody started Smart Girls in 1992. Through our marketing, consulting, and coaching services, we have helped literally thousands of actors and screenwriters empower themselves and move the next step forward in their careers.
